After speculation probably predating "The Jetsons" that we'd end up watching sports in 3-D, we're finally on the brink of wearing those funny glasses to see the future.
The latest: TNT will announce Wednesday its "NBA All-Star Saturday Night," which features dunking and shooting contests, will air live in 3-D in 80 movie theaters in 35 states Feb. 14.
Fox last week announced it would air college football's Bowl Championship Series title game in 3-D in theaters - and hopes to do same with the Daytona 500.
Turner Sports President David Levy says ticket prices haven't been set, and he's not sure whether theatergoers will get an "arena experience" - meaning no TV announcers - rather than regular coverage. Long-term, the question is whether 3-D sports will be limited to theaters or, if consumers drive sales of 3-D TV sets, there will be home viewing. For homes, he says, set-makers would have to chip in: "The 3-D expense is enormous based on what we think the expense will be." Levy also suggests a futuristic element: "We believe the capabilities of online 3-D are not that far away." Even the Jetsons didn't think of that.
